Rafa: I’ve heard of people convulsing so hard they break their own backs. People coughing up black gunk for weeks on end before it builds up in their lungs to the point of drowning them. People with no prior history for stomach issues vomiting so much blood they exsanguinate within a few days. People boiling to death in their baths. *sigh of frustration as he wipes a hand back over his head.* Even some freak accidents are blamed on demons, like someone choking to death on their breakfast, or falling out a window, or tripping on their feet and landing just wrong so as to break their necks when they hit the ground. I’m personally not sure I buy into the accidents, you’d be surprised at some of the stupid ways people can end up dead and there’s nothing sinister about it, but the other things... I’ve treated some of those myself, Detective, and I can’t explain what caused their ailments. I’ve never seen anything like them before. Now...now they happen more often than I care to think about.

Darnell: *nods* I know one such victim, coughing up black gunk no doctor or healer can identify. It's why I'm here. Can you tell me about any connections at all among the victims? Where they'd been, who they'd been dealing with, anything?

Rafa: *looks at Darnell...* The king started showing those symptoms. I didn’t argue his insistence to leave because I knew I could do nothing to help him. *are you here because of the king?* Connections aren’t really something healers ask after........... unless a plague breaks out. I’m sorry, Detective. As far as locations, I’ve noted no link. They’ve been all over the place and at different times.

Darnell: *frowns deeply, nods* The king is the victim I mentioned. He summoned me as soon as he arrived back at the capitol. As his detective and as his /friend/, I've sworn to do everything in my power to discover - and reverse - what's been done to him. *shakes his head* Kind Sidon wasn't aware of other victims, but I can't say that I'm at all surprised. I will do what I can in their names as well.

Rafa: ...*nods* He's... still alive then? At least was... whenever you left the capital? *sounds hopeful* I hope you succeed. Not just for the king, he's a good king, a king this land needs, but also for everyone else afraid of phantoms.

Darnell: *nods, frowning* With how far-reaching I already know his influence to be, I'd be surprised if he /hasn't/ already acchieved a stranglehold first on the major city closest to him. *sits back and runs a hand back through his hair - Life Light, what should he do now? This is sounding bigger and bigger than he can truly hope to deal with...not that he won't fight to anyway*

Rafa: *will rest a hand on Darnell’s shoulder.* I’ll do what I can to help and I’ll let you know if I think of anything else.

Darnell: *covers the amin's hand, giving it a squeeze* Thank you, Rafa. It's good to know that I have at least one ally I can trust in this city. *sighs and puts away his journal* I should get home. *reaches into his coin pouch and pulls out a handful to offer Rafa - it's a generous amount for a healer's services* Please accept this.

Rafa: That is far more than is warranted for my services, Detective. *he’ll pick out only as much as he’s owed unless Darnell stops him and insists*

Darnell: *shakes his head, catching one of Rafa's hands and placing the whole amount into it, holding the amin's hand between both of his* Rafa, I insist. One, I owe you my life. Two, you may have just made yourself a target for it - I pray that's not the case. And three, I'm sure you've treated many who couldn't pay. Let me help your coffers so you can continue to pay your own expenses and treat those who need you.

Rafa: *studies Darnell for a long moment...and then nods, giving him a small smile* Thank you. *he'll pocket the money and stand up. He'll put it away and then come help Darnell to his feet* Keep that wound covered for a few days, cleaning it twice a day until the stitches dissolve. I'll mix up an antiseptic for you to take with you.

Darnell: *nods* My adoptive father is an amin healer. *in other words, he's familiar with things and knows to comply*
