Darnell: */snuggles/ to her again, nodding* I did. /We/ did. Dad took in three hurt, frightened, /angry/ kids and he helped us to heal and grow up into strong, healthy adults.

Zasha: Sounds like a good guy.

Darnell: *nods* I wish you guys could meet him. He's really an amazing person.

Zasha: Yeah? So tell us more about him...?

Darnell: He's a healer. Amin, wolf-type. Tall, powerful . . . and as gentle as anything. Loving, supportive, non-judgmental. Incredibly knowledgeable and skilled. He's . . . *shrugs* He means the world to me. Any good thing I am or have today is because of him.

Vin: *wry smile* Sounds like a fairy tale.

Keziah: Haha, yeah, too good to be true, eh? He sound great.

Darnell: *nods* My sisters and I thought so too. It's why it took us so long to finally really come around to him. And probably part of why he started singing that song to us every night. *has a thought...but shakes it from his mind - no, that'd probably be asking too much*

Tyli: What? You think of something?

Darnell: Ah . . . it's nothing. I just . . . maybe it'd be all right for Terris to visit. To see Rashek, if nothing else.

Tyli: He’d certainly be welcome. Your little sister too.

Tyli: No, you just didn’t want to believe us. Us, who’ve been here for years. Who know our Mistress very well. We kept telling you that you’d see your family again. That you’ll see home. *snuggles him, grinning as she teases him.*
Vin: Hey, I don’t blame him. Too good to be true, like his dad.

Darnell: *nods* Too good to be true, plus . . . you /have/ been here for years. Have any of /you/ seen your families since being first separated from them? Even with humans, I've heard of way too many times where someone's convicted of a minor crime, only supposed to serve half a year, a year, two, only for their families to never see or hear from them again.

Vin: ...Most of us don’t have family outside of here.
Tyli: That doesn’t change that we know for certain you’ll see home again when your time is up.

Darnell: *nods at Vin, his look sympathetic* I know...and even if you did... *looks at Tyli...nods...*

Vin: If we did they’d likely be found and invited to move in. *wry smile* Still, Tyli’s right. We know Vashti, and she’d make sure the system let you go.

Darnell: *faint frown, head tilt* Does /everyone/ here call her by first name?

Vin: Yeah. Probably. At least some of the time. Why?

Darnell: I guess I'm just still getting used to that. I'm from one of the lowest classes over slaves before moving to the capitol and becoming a detective. Everyone is to be called by their title if they have one, or Mr or Miss and their last name. I call the captain of the King's Guard by first name because we're good friends as well as on the same level, but only between us, rarely if ever in front of others. *shrugs* It's a respect thing if nothing else, for their position and what they've achieved.

Warik: It’s essentially the same with us. We use her title out of reapect, and always in front of others, but we’re all close to each other and to her, so we also call her by name.

Darnell: ...... I see. *not sure if he'll ever be that close, she seems...so aloof, unapproachable, to him*

*Tyli snuggles him close and talk will turn to other things until bed.*

*It’s Skif’s birthday today. The morning has gone as usual, with the boy glowing at all the well wishes. He’ll head out with Darnell to the stables.*
Skif: *beams at Darnell.* I’m hoping to go riding today, for my birthday. Would you join me if dad and Mistress say yes?

Darnell: *grins* Sure, I'd love to. *gives the boy a quick snug as they walk*

Skif: Yay! *HUGS Darnell, stopping them both for a moment.*
*When they step into the stable, Vashti is there with Warrik, and there are /four/ horses leaning out of stalls.*

Darnell: *nods greeting* Milady, Warik. Oh! New horse?

Skif: *eyes pop wide and he approaches the animal.*
Vashti: *smiling. She gives Darnell a nod of greeting.* Happy birthday, Skif.
Skif: Wow. What...what's his name? *takes a peek to confirm “his” is correct.*
Vashti: That is for you to decide. He is yours.
Skif: M-mine?! *grins!!* Really?!
Vashti: *nods* Really.
Skif: *glomps her* Thank you! Thank you thank you thank you!
Vashti: *soft laugh and wraps an arm around him.* Happy Birthday.

Darnell: *hanging back out of the way – this suddenly doesn’t feel like something he should be part of, but he’s /grinning/ for Skif’s sake*

Vashti: Shall we ride?
Skif: Yes! Oh yes, please!
Vashti: *looks at Darnell, still smiling.* Would you like to join us?

Darnell: *hands up, still grinning himself* This seems to be a family affair. I don’t want to intrude.

Warik: Nonsense. You’re more than welcome.
Skif: Please? You said you would. *turns fo Darnell, eyes pleadig and grin wide*
Vashti: I already had Nasha pack a picnic for four... *figuring he would be here with Skif and would likely join.*

Darnell: *grin widens, and he shrugs before lowering his hands* In that case, how can I refuse? *steps forward to join them*
