Rick's admission---admissions?---prompted a bark of a laugh from Sam, who crossed her arms as she regarded her new ally, worry for Noemi briefly displaced so she could be mildly amused and incredulous. “I'm not entirely sure I believe you. No offence. Would you believe that, despite the words coming out of my face in the past sixty seconds, I'm being this candid as a good-faith gesture? But speaking of good faith gestures, I should say: thank you for supper.” With that segue, she shifted her attention to answering.
“That beet salad is amazing. That's what I'm having---that, and the millefeuille. If you're a burger guy, you gotta try theirs and the onion rings. Like, I know that's a thirty dollar burger, but it's maybe even worth it. If you're much for sweets, the Queen Elizabeth cake is definitely worth it, unless you hate coconut.” Noemi had been eager to try that, after butter tarts and nanaimo bar, and with that knowledge resurfacing, there, there was the worry back full-force. “Do you?”
Then: “And, d'you mind explaining the 'few aces up your sleeve when it comes to the paranomal,' or are you hoping to hit me with 'ladies first?'” Sam's tone wasn't accusatory, but curious... with a touch of 'teasing.' Still, she meant what she said, and felt the question was a good one, for learning a little more what Rick was really like... and getting a decent idea of his abilities, eventually.
